Sitting quietly and watching the world at any location or any point in time can be immensely illuminating to a painter. I see a stemmed flower bending in the breeze, a boy licking an ice cream cone, a duck waddling into a pond. The sun slips behind a cloud, changing the light and everything it touches, enriching shadows, brightening highlights. Life in all its expressions is constantly in movement.

Quiet Morning

For a short while in my youth, I lived in Galveston. I still enjoy visiting that area, several smaller towns have similar but less busy docks. In this painting, which I label more impressionistic than truly abstract, I was enjoying the color of the morning sky duplicated in the water more than noticing the boats. Water always soothes me, and sometimes I have to pick up a paint brush. 18"x24" Acrylic on Canvas $375

Tiffany

On the day I decided to create a white-on-white painting, I must have been feeling exceptionally adventurous. It's true that I usually paint with a rainbow of color, so the decision was probably based on wanting to not get in a creative rut. Fortunately, white is rarely pure white, because it takes on slight tints according to the light. I was so delighted, though, with meeting the challenge that I carried the painting with me to a meeting of Houston Focus On Concerns For Women, a favorite group I meet with once a month in Houston. A visitor there that day fell in love with this piece and wanted it for her beach house. She asked if I would name it "Tiffany" and bought it on the spot. Sometimes life brings people together in unexpected joy. SOLD

Love Blossoms In the Garden

Our area abounds with garage sales and estate sales, mostly, I think, because people like to sit outside and talk to the neighbors who happen by, and shoppers find it interesting to see what their neighbors have been hiding in their closets. Secrets In the Attic

My home is decorated in a style i fondly call, "colorful clutter," so collections come naturally to me. With all that inspiration around me, it would make sense that I'd find joy in painting still life - yet I rarely set up a collection and paint it "as is." Instead, i draw on memories and photographs and, yes, sometimes an item from my clutter, then moosh it together with texture and pattern. This one refused to come together until I realized it needed the stack of itmes on the left - a drum, a cage and a birdhouse. 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas SOLD

Invite Magic

Each year the Waco Arboretum has a spring art show as a fundraiser. This little floral was a favorite of mine, so I entered it. A lady at the reception was so taken with this one that she stood gazing for a long time, then she told me she had to take it home. I was happy, the arboretum director was happy, and the lady phoned me later to say it was perfect for the place she'd envisioned hanging it. 9"x12" Acrylic on canvas SOLD

Three Twenty Five

Painting a still life became more fun for me when I stopped setting up a group of items in advance. That was okay at times, but once again I was copying what was in front of me. Instead, I began gathering favorite objects and painting each item in the place and at the angle I want it, even if that means items are larger, smaller or at a different perspective that other items in the painting. Boys On the Beach

One day I saw some kids playing at the edge of the water, having a great time. I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures. They turned out great, but later, when I decided to paint that scene, I realized the time of day was all wrong for what I wanted to show.
