The German impressionist, Franz Marc, obviously liked color, and he seemed to have fun with his process. Color and fun - my attitude in a nutshell. When traffic and noise became unbearable in Houston, I moved to a small Texas town. The first time I saw deer playing in my back yard, I knew I was in a perfect location to engage my creative nature. Other woodland animals are a common sight, as well. While most artists would paint what they see, I prefer to follow Marc's lead to colorful fun and abstraction.

The musician in this mixed media painting is not as universally known as others I've painted, yet this piece remains one of my fans’ favorites. It was purchased at a show where two other buyers were keen on taking it home — and none of them knew who was depicted. Recently, a more seasoned music lover saw a print of the original and said instantly, “Is that Leon Redbone?” Yep.

Artists, like writers, are supposed to find a “style” and stick with it. I try, but I confess to being easily led astray by my fickle emotions. To me, painting the same subject or in a constant style or using the same color palette robs me of enthusiasm for the work I so enjoy. Although I have no idea how I came to paint it, this stylized acrylic also sold quickly, and is also one of my favorites.

As a frequent traveler and avid amateur photographer during the 1980s, I could not look at a sunrise or sunset without wanting to capture it. On a Caribbean island, I snapped several pictures of boy playing in shallow water. The sea and sky were nearly the same shade of blue, the boys mere silhouettes against a blazing daylight sun. Later, in my studio, I painted the scene the way I wanted to see it, first with the hot oranges and purple of sunset, then with the cool morning colors of sunrise. Both were popular watercolor paintings, sold quickly and became two of my first reproductions.
